Black Moon by Kenneth Calhoun - Review

I received this book for free from Blogging for books to read and give my honest review.

Where to begin?  I think this book cured my insomnia.  Okay not really, if anything it cause me to have nightmares.  It wasn't awful but it drove me crazy quite a bit.  The premise is the whole world suddenly is overcome with an epidemic.  But unlike your other zombie type apocalypse stories this one isn't a virus or exposure to a toxin or a curse or whatever.  It is insomnia.  Which honestly sleeplessness might be worse than a virus.  A virus has a cure, sudden insomnia is something wrong in the brain itself.  Yes, it could have been caused by a virus but no where in the book were we given that as a fact.  It just happened.  And it didn't seem to be contagious...it picked its victims with no real pattern.  One day people started sleeping less and less, driving the entire world into hysteria.  I say entire world because that's what they say but how do we know it is the whole world?  What if its just us crazy American's and the rest of the world is just standing on the sidelines going "good riddance". As for the characters, I wasn't irritated with the number, I was okay with that.  It was too unnecessary points of view.  I'll explain below.

**SPOILERS**

Moving on to my thoughts.  I wasn't mad at the hallucinations and strange speech.  I get it. Lack of sleep will literally make you a nutter.  What got me was the animal instincts that showed through the surface.  It is like they were no longer human.  No longer able to process right from wrong, good from bad.  It was terrifying.  Your body is beyond exhaustion. It is beyond the realm of sleeplessness a BRAIN can handle.  That is the key.  Your BRAIN needs to shut down.  If it can't bad things happen.  It was torture for me to read about these poor souls who just wanted to rest but were unable to.  They could feel the waves of sleep rushing in and then nothing.   Add in the heartbreaking stories of those who could still sleep...the sleepers and it was the stuff of nightmares...well if you can sleep that is.  They sleepers lived in fear of sleeping because the sleepless would savagely murder them to "get the sleep out of them".  How messed up is that?!?  Can you imagine not being able to sleep, not because you can't but because your life could be snuffed out just because you can.

The characters were okay.  The only ones I really liked were Lila and Chase...and Felecia near the end.  You would think I would have preferred the adult but no, he made me mad.  You have Briggs whose can only think of finding his crazed wife.  She succumbed to the insomnia, tried to kill him and escaped their apartment.  I can understand going look for her but once he ran out of leads he really should have given up and oh I don't know maybe looked for others like him.  Speaking of his wife, Caroline, she CLEARLY was unstable before the epidemic.  She showed telltale signs of depression/anxiety/possible bipolar, the insomnia just enhanced it.  Then we meet Chase who is basically normal but he has penis problems.  He is OBSESSED with his ex Felecia but they broke up because he can't get it up.  His whole story arc was messed up!  I really thought he was immune then we get to the crazy chapter where he has a never ending erection and steals sheep.  His friend Jordan was odd but seemed to mean well.  We don't know what happens to him, assumed dead.  Then there is Felecia.  She seemed to actually love Chase but the no way to be intimate thing came between them, that and he was jealous of her BOSS.  She comes off as selfish at first but she really isn't.  She actually cares so much.  And she is brave.  She volunteers for a procedure that killed her superior.  And it works...she's going to be okay (or not).  We have this poor child Lila who is all alone and almost murdered by her parents who can't sleep.  She is smart, she is a survivor and we have no idea what happened to her!  We are teased with the idea that she fell to insomnia but then she falls asleep (I think) and that's it, no more story about her.

I enjoyed it for the most part but there were unnecessary parts.  Like why do we need to read a whole chapter about Briggs' brother and sister in law slowing going insane and probably doing something horrible to their newborn.  Why was that necessary???  Why do I need such great detail of the never ending erection.  I get it "if it lasts more than x hours see a doctor".  But we get insane details about this to the point where it is almost uncomfortable.  It felt too scattered.  Too many things going on and not enough answers.  What happened to Lila, how in the world did Briggs survive the overdose, have they found other sleepers or is it just those at the compound, is Briggs the answer to all of this since he can still sleep without an implant...so many questions.  Also, how come the genius scientists are looking at the animals?  As far as we can tell they are still sleeping, shouldn't that tell us something?

Whatever the case may be it was an okay story.  The ending was forced.  There is all this build up where you think all main characters are coming together to fix this and then boom back to Briggs' point of view where he's at the sleep compound telling stories to those with implants since they can't dream.  He finally gets over his wife and it ends with him dreaming of something other than her, The end.  What?!? I just didn't like that end.  I felt like the end should have had hope for everyone...not just him.  Like there is a whole city of natural sleepers and the world is going to be okay because they found a fix (that doesn't involve brain surgery). Or he found Lila and I don't know...I'm not a writer but the ended needed something more.

Thoughts as I read:

Well the world went to shit

Dessange Paris - California Blonde - Some thoughts

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

So I have blonde hair (no secret).  It is naturally dark blonde/very light brown depending on the time of year but I choose to keep it much lighter year round with a little help from a box (or salon).  I received the Dessange Vox Box for California Blonde.  I am always leery of  new products, mainly because I take pride in my pretty blonde locks and I'd like them to stay pretty for as long as possible.

This one being made for color treated blondes made me a little more comfortable.  Luckily I received it right about the time I was due for an appointment with my hairdresser.  I must say these products pleasantly surprised me.

First off the Shampoo/Conditioner:
The scent while a little strong is appealing, at least to me.  It reminds me of being at the salon.  A little goes a long way (I have medium/long hair).  It doesn't leave me hair oily or dry.  It looks healthy.  Since using the Dessange Products my hair seems shinier with a tad more bounce.  Usually after I get my hair done it looks great until it is washed a few times.  Then is looks a little dull (not bad by any means but not quite as pretty).  So far (2.5 weeks in) and my hair is still just left the salon shiny.  It is also very soft and smells wonderful (did I mention I like the scent).  So I believe I will purchase these products once the free ones run out.

I usually let the conditioner sit for a few minutes before I rinse.  You know, while I wash/shave.  It may do nothing but I think letting it sit for a little while helps.  I should also mention when I get out the shower I don't rub my hair dry (causes too much frizz), I wrap it in the towel and "dab"  it dry.  I don't wash my hair everyday.  I also rarely blow dry my hair.  It air dries after most washings, drying with a slight wave.  If I don't like how the wave looks I straighten it.  I am telling you this because my habits might affect why these products seem to work so well for me.

I've only used the color correcter twice since I've received it. Mainly because it says to use about once a week and I haven't had it that long.  I will say though, even with only two uses my hair is definitely less brassy.  Let me set the scene.  I'd just washed my hair with the above products.  I let my hair towel dry a few minutes so it wasn't sopping wet.  Then I opened the tube of corrector.  It is indigo...royal blue...purple.  I'm not sure how to classify its color but it is unnerving, especially when you have very blonde hair.  But I had read elsewhere that it was safe so I tried it.  It smells amazing just like the Shampoo/Conditioner.  You don't need much but you want to make sure you are evenly running it through your tresses.  USE GLOVES!  It should come with gloves but whatever.  I put my hair in a clip and let it sit the full 10 minutes.  Rinsing was unnerving also...having blue looking dye go down the drain.  I kept imagining my hair looking very smurfish but it didn't.  It actually didn't look any different, until it dried.  Then it look smashing (at least to me).  See below.  Yes I know in one it is straight and the other it isn't BUT the color difference is compelling.
Taken two weeks apart.  Left is before color corrector, right is after.

**NOTE** Images are not altered or filtered.  Taken with iPhone 6

So yes I would 100% recommend these products to my bottle blonde friends.  They have worked amazingly for me.  Much better than any other "for color treated hair" products.

They are Randomly delicious!!!

I received Randoms®, by Wonka from Smiley 360 for free to try.   I have always preferred a fruity snack to a chocolaty snack.  These did not disappoint. They were full of flavor but not absolutely horrible for you.

When they say random, they mean random. They come in 70 different shapes, 7 fruit flavors, and 3 gummy candy texture.  Each handful is different from the last.  The fruit flavors are different too.  They don't seem like the traditional "gummy" flavors.  Maybe it is the "real fruit juice", not sure but I like it.  Also, the "random" pieces with cream, those were interesting.  I wasn't sure about them at first but they were actually quite tasty.  A serving consists of 10 pieces.  In those pieces you get about 140 calories, 35g of sugar and 35mg sodium.  Granted a popular gummy bear brand offers 17 pieces per serving equaling 140 calories, 21g of sugar and 0mg of sodium.  But I think the difference comes in the variety you get with the Randoms®.  It isn't just plain gummies.   Plus there are all the Wacky shapes.  I don't know but to me they just seem more fun.

I would definitely recommend them to anyone I know who is looking for a fruity snack.  They get an A++ from my household (and workplace).

Try them!

Near Enemy (Spademan #2) - Adam Sternbergh - Review

I received this book for free from Blogging for Books.

This book is definitely a solid four stars.  It had its moments of "meh" but for the most part was quite interesting.  Honestly the last quarter of the book was hard to put down.  It was action packed and twisty...very very twisty.  I liked it!

We start just shortly after the last book ends...and by shortly I mean, the baby has been born and they are in hiding.  Of course people are still trying to kill her and her love child because her father's church was full of nut jobs.  Spademan now has to look after her but he's not doing a very good job.  He has an instant, albeit warped, "family" yet he keeps his distance...why?!?!?

Of course there is a new baddie in town and it still revolves around the Limn.  This virtual world needs to be unplugged...it is just bad news.  Can we die in the Limn, supposedly not..if no then what is happening???  This book isn't as disturbing as its predecessor in regards to Spademan BUT it is just as, if not more, disturbing in the lets do horrible things and justify it as "saving humanity".  It touches on prejudices towards Muslims and women.  Basically in this new broken world fear of middle easterners is like it is today times 10,000 and seeing women as insignificant is just as bad.  I really enjoyed this book.  It kept me guessing.  I didn't figure it out which I liked.  They keep just enough out of reach that you can't draw conclusions until the author is ready for you to draw them.

As creeptastic as the story is, it is a good story. The main character is funny in his own way.  The sub characters are snarky.  It almost fun until people are getting sliced and diced and blown to smithereens. At that point you remember how jacked up the future is and it sobers you a bit.

**SPOILERS**

I don't know how I feel about nurse.  I don't think Spademan needs a love interest...he is a murder for hire, we don't need a love story!  I was "eh" about the weirdness I sensed with Persephone in the first book but I for some reason would prefer her as the interest.  Especially now that Simon is indisposed, stuck between reality and the Limn.  I am glad Nurse isn't a baddie but I still am not sure about her.  Now, I knew the cops that were sent to watch Spademan and his "family" were bad.  That I did figure out but I did NOT see the Boonce twist.  I really thought he was a good guy not a nut hell bent on killing people in the Limn.

Spademan is played from the beginning.  He thinks he is doing good by not killing Lesser as requested by the mysterious woman, when in reality he made things so much worse for everyone.  Now Boonce is dead in reality but alive in the Limn...not in a Loop, 100% functioning, it is DISTURBING!  Simon is stuck in limbo and Mark almost died!!!  He didn't but he is tapped in again and may not return for some time.  Persephone is stupid!  Yes, Spademan did a bad job of keeping her safe but it isn't his fault they were all played.  I hate that she left and he lost his "family".  He still has Nurse but I like him being "Uncle Spademan".

Then there is Salem.  I thought he was bad, they got me.  They tricked me just like they tricked everyone else.  He wasn't an extremist he was good.  He wanted to save people not bring down what was left of new York.  I didn't catch on until Spademan was going 90 to nothing trying to get to Atlantic Ave.  That is when I realized Boonce was pinning it all on Salem and was going to have him killed by playing on the fears of the already fragile New Yorkers.  Plot twist Salem is a she, the she that called in the hit on Lesser.  She is the sister that was supposedly dead but Salem never actually existed in the first place.  So it was always only the girl...with a new identity.  A necessary identity because no one will listen to a girl but a boy...he can be a programming prodigy and a leader (that is messed up!).   She created the programming that Boonce tortured out of Lesser...programming that allows him to survive in the Limn without a body in reality...programming that I am assuming will change everything.

Now an ex tap in addict is going back in the Limn to stop him.  Spademan, please don't die...

Below are my ramblings as I read:

Page 11 — March 10, 2015
"I pull out the lock-picking tools I keep hidden in my hair"
At least Spademan still has a sense of humor

City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett

I received this book to for free to review from Blogging for Books.

I honestly don't know where to start or how to review it.  There is just so much we learn here.  It was quite captivating.  It is definitely a different take on the epic fantasy type novels.  You have Divinities thought long dead, an oppressive "home" country, a decimated continent and magic.  This book touches on very real societal problems, it just masks them with Divine Edicts and complete insanity.  When we first meet Shara she is scary, intimidating, she almost seems unreal.  You think she is  coldhearted but she really isn't.  She thirsts for knowledge even if said knowledge is considered somewhat illegal.  She is insanely smart.  She has a "savage" as a "secretary"/dear friend and she was/is in love with a man who happens to like men more so than women.  She is the most real character I have read about in quite a while.

***SPOILERS***

Saypur was a colony of The Continent.  The Continent was ruled by the Divine, it was "blessed".  Saypur was thought of as below them...they were there to be slaves and nothing more.  They did not have a Divinity...it is almost as if they were "forgotten" or not seen as real humans.  At some point the Divine/The Continent went too far and they had an uprising lead by the Kaj killing off most of the Divinities and their creations, leaving the Continent a right mess.  We come in to this 70 years in the future.  Saypur is the ruling land and The Continent is in ruins.  About 1/2 of everything that was on the Continent ceased to exist once the Divine died, everything changed in a "blink".  The Kaj's decedent is an operative for Saypur living on the continent. It's a story about oppression and blind obedience.  Yes you conquered them but to enact your views on future generations as punishment is no better than what was done to you in the past by the Divine and their Blessed.  It really is disturbing how people will try to justify their actions even when they are clearly immoral.

What we learn.  Sigrud (Shara's secretary) is from a land of Pirates.  He is the lost Prince that people "sing" about.  He feels he is unworthy and doesn't wish to return home.  He is thought to be dead.   Vohannes (Vo) is Shara's Ex.  Someone she loved dearly.  They began a torrid love affair when they were in school but she eventually learns he is gay.  He is from the Continent so being gay is against his beliefs.  She is hurt and pushes him away.  Then there is Mulaghesh, the Saypur Governor running Bulikov (the once capital city for the Divine). She is ex-military and she is rough around the edges.  She wants to just not be involved in anything anymore but she is goodhearted and keeps getting pulled in to doing the right thing.  There are other characters but these are the main ones.  These are the ones you remember (besides the Divine).

I had a feeling Shara was touched or Blessed or whatever.  Her power is weakened by the mixing of bloodlines but she has enough to get by.  She doesn't know this until the end but you start wondering when she is performing all these "Miracles".  Throw in how weird her Auntie is acting and you know something is up.  I liked that her and Vo kind of made amends.  She loves him & accepts him for who he is and he loves her because she is amazing and she does accept him.  He likes men so what...well his "God" Kolkan thinks this is bad and must be punished.  Yes the Divine are thought to be dead but clearly one/some have survived.  When he is killed I was in denial.  I thought they made a good team so I was hoping he lived.  Alas, he did not but she honors him which shows how deeply she did care.

The mixing of the two remaining Gods is just disturbing.  Jukov is a trickster, a lover of the flesh and indulgences.  Kolkan is a judge, you should not indulge in anything.  Enjoying the flesh is not allowed...especially with those of the same sex.  They are complete opposites but are fused together making for one insane Divinity.  Of course Olvos being still alive isn't surprising...that Shara is her decedent is slightly surprising.  I don't know that I trust her...she is a Divinity after all but she seems to be the most sane of the bunch.  I am sure we will see more of her in the future.

It really is quite an adventure we go on. We are trying to find out why some Miracles still work, which Gods might have survived and how to fix the relationship between Saypur and the Continent.  There is murder and mayhem.  There is betrayal.  There is so much that happens and so many creatures of nightmares.  My brain is a scattered mess trying to summarize it all.  All I know is good prevailed, I think, but there is still so much to be done.  I can't wait to read more about the lands and people we learned about in the City of Stairs.
